Introduction
R and I stayed in the Cotswolds town of Burford for a long weekend. We‘ve been to the Cotswolds before, but only drove past Burford; R wanted a chance to see it properly.
Saturday
It didn’t take us all that long to get there, although there is no railway station: we took a bus to Oxford, a train to Hanborough, and another bus to Burford.
Once there we checked into our room; we stayed at the Bull, which is (allegedly) a 14th century coaching inn. I don’t know if any of the current building really dates back that far, but it’s certainly pretty old. Anyway, we had a short wander up to the end of the high street.
We ate dinner at the Spice Lounge, which is a very nice Indian restaurant. But it slightly surprised us that Burford doesn’t have any other decent restaurants for an evening meal - you have to eat there, or settle for English pub food.
Sunday
We did a short town walk from a leaflet. Almost the entire town is very pretty, with buildings all made of the local stone.
At this point we took a slight extension to the village of Fulbrook (which is across the bridge and along the road a short way). It has quite a nice church.
We returned to Burford via a back lane and some very expensive-looking houses.
Back in Burford, we visited the town museum, which is quite a nice one, and one of the tearooms. Burford is much better served with tea rooms than restaurants.
Monday
We followed a short local walk, partly from another leaflet, which looped around to the north and east of town.
I was quite impressed by St Oswald’s Church, which is tiny and old (mainly 13th century) and was apparently built on the base of a Roman building.
The last part of the walk returned to Burford along the river.
We also had a look around Burford church.
That’s all; on Tuesday we went back home. It was a nice weekend, although there wasn’t much there to keep us longer!
