Introduction
Between Christmas and New Year’s, my parents and I went up to Belper in Derbyshire to visit my brother and his family.
St Pancras
We had a while to wait for the train at St Pancras station, so Mum and I went for a short walk to the nearby canal.
The journey to Belper was uneventful this year.
Cromford
On the next day my brother led a walk from Cromford railway station, a short train journey away. We started by following a path uphill.
The first exciting landmark was the penny tree, which is a large tree that (for some unknown reason) people stick coins into. That might not be healthy for the tree, but it seems to be coping.
Next the route took us down to the Cromford Canal.
We walked along the canal for a little way.
We stopped for lunch in a café at Cromford Wharf, the end of the canal. (Rather a lot of other people had had the same idea; it was packed and we had to wait a while.) After that we crossed the road to look at the Cromford Mills complex.
After thoroughly investigating the mills, we returned to the railway station, via the local church.
Belper mills and industry
The next day, Dad and I avoided going to the swimming pool with the rest and took a short walk around Belper instead. It was very windy, and rather grey.
We then walked to other interesting areas of the town.
Belper in the sun
Before heading back on the last day, we walked around the town (in glorious sunshine).
